Simon’s screenplay of JOURNEY’S END will be released autumn 2017 (director Saul Dibb, BFI/Metro International). His stage adaptations of PRIDE & PREJUDICE (Regent’s Park/Sheffield Crucible/Guthrie Minneapolis) and Michael Morpurgo’s AN ELEPHANT IN THE GARDEN are on UK tour. In spring 2017 his award-winning version of Morpurgo’s PRIVATE PEACEFUL tours Ireland, and his musical of O.Z. Livanelli’s BLISS premières in Germany.
Other screenplays include: Jane Austen’s SANDITON (to shoot 2017, Goldcrest/Irish Film Board); PRIVATE PEACEFUL (Fluidity Films 2012); and WHAT YOU WILL for Filter Theatre, whose theatre work Simon also produced on world tour 2010-2016, including WATER and TWELFTH NIGHT. His recent stage adaptations include: UK tours of A ROOM WITH A VIEW (director Adrian Noble, A.C.T.); Penelope Lively’s MOON TIGER; ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND (Polka/Bristol Old Vic, TMA Award winner); Morpurgo’s TWIST OF GOLD (Polka), TORO! TORO! (Salisbury) and THE MOZART QUESTION (Scamp); Philip Pullman’s THE SCARECROW & HIS SERVANT (Southwark Playhouse); and Geraldine McCaughrean’s NOT THE END OF THE WORLD for Bristol Old Vic where Simon was Artistic Director with David Farr. With Tim Supple Simon adapted Salman Rushdie’s MIDNIGHT’S CHILDREN and Ted Hughes’s TALES FROM OVID, and with Paul Greengrass he co-wrote EPITAPH FOR THE OFFICIAL SECRETS ACT, all for the RSC where Simon was Literary Manager.
In 2016 Simon directed a ground-breaking Iraqi tour of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM in Arabic and Kurdish. Previous direction includes: TARTUFFE (Royal Welsh College); the fiftieth anniversary production of Pinter’s THE ROOM; and CYRANO DE BERGERAC, Lee Hall’s CHILD OF THE SNOW, Pinter’s THE DUMB WAITER and THE BIRTHDAY PARTY, all for Bristol Old Vic. He has also worked extensively as a producer/dramaturg for Theatre Royal Bath Productions and the Gate Theatre London; and as a script editor/development executive for Tiger Aspect Productions, Granada and BBC Drama.
