Bio

Amy Ng is a British Hong Kong playwright, screenwriter and translator whose work spans theatre, television, radio and literary adaptation. She is known for creating ambitious, politically engaged stories that explore history, identity, migration and cultural exchange. Her most recent play, Shanghai Dolls, premiered at Kiln Theatre in 2025 to critical acclaim. Her previous theatre credits include Miss Julie (after Strindberg, Storyhouse Chester), Under the Umbrella (Belgrade Theatre Coventry and UK tour), Acceptance (Hampstead Theatre), Shangri-La (Finborough Theatre) and Girl, Disappeared, which was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Playwriting in 2023. Amy is currently under commission at both the Almeida Theatre and the National Theatre, where she is adapting the classic Chinese play The Peony Pavilion. She was part of the inaugural Genesis Almeida New Playwrights Big Plays programme and continues to develop new work for stage and screen.

For television, Amy wrote Episode 3 of Simon Pegg's cyber-thriller The Undeclared War Series 2, returning in autumn 2026. She has also developed original projects with Bad Wolf, Merman and Sky, and was named a Broadcast Hot Shot in 2022. Her radio work includes Tiger Girls (BBC Radio 4) and Kilburn Passion (BBC Radio 3).

Originally trained as a historian, Amy specialises in the history of multinational empires, imperial decline and nationality conflict. She is the author of Nationalism and Political Liberty (Oxford University Press). Fluent in English, German and Chinese, she also translates contemporary Chinese plays into English and is recognised as a leading voice bringing East Asian stories and perspectives to UK audiences.

Amy lives in the UK and writes for theatre, television, radio and film.
