Carmen Nasr

Writer

Bio

Carmen Nasr is a British-Lebanese writer whose work is bold and politically resonant: she unflinchingly tackles global power imbalances—from migrant labour in DUBAILAND to colonial histories in THE CLIMBERS—with clarity and humanity.

In 2025, Carmen’s National Theatre debut SAMIRA was announced as part of Artistic Director Indhu Rubasingham’s first season. She is also part of Rupert Goold’s final season at the Almeida Theatre with her adaptation of Babak Anvari’s Iranian horror film UNDER THE SHADOW directed by Nadia Latif. Further commissions include new work for Shakespeare’s Globe and Hampstead Theatre.

Carmen’s previous work includes the breakout play DUBAILAND (Finborough Theatre, 2018) and THE CLIMBERS directed by Guy Jones (Theatre by the Lake, 2022). She has also created ensemble-led work including THE MALADIES (Almeida Young Company/The Yard, 2022); LET KILBURN SHAKE (Kiln Theatre’s Young Company, 2018) and I AM LYSISTRATA (Makani/Park Theatre, 2024).

She was awarded the prestigious Channel 4 Playwrights’ Scheme award in 2017, and her early play THE HOUSE OF MY FATHER was longlisted for the Bruntwood Prize. Her work has been supported by leading development programmes including the Royal Court Playwriting Group and the Orange Tree Writers Collective.

For screen, Carmen is adapting Avni Doshi’s Booker Prize–shortlisted novel BURNT SUGAR for The Lot Productions and she is also developing her first original TV project with support from Sky Productions.

Carmen is a committed educator, teaching playwriting at the University of Manchester and Royal Holloway, University of London.
