Bio
Nel Crouch is an award-winning London-based theatre director and playwright, and Artistic Director of Bucket Club, a Farnham Maltings associate company. She makes bold, audience-first work across new writing, devised theatre and reimagined classics, with a signature style that is playful, welcoming and richly engaging for audiences of all ages. Blending comedy, live music and big-hearted storytelling, Nel creates adventurous theatre that puts connection at its core and invites audiences in to play. Her work has toured nationally and internationally, winning honours including the Brighton Fringe Award for Excellence and a Musical Theatre Network Award for Innovation.
As a director, Nel has helmed new work by writers and makers such as Claire Gaydon (Piece Of Me — Camden People’s Theatre), Marietta Kirkbride (Five Children & It — The Egg / Bucket Club) and Sabrina Mahfouz (The Love I Feel Is Red — Tobacco Factory Theatres / Òran Mór). She has worked closely with the cycling Shakespearean Troupe The HandleBards for many years, most recently directing their first indoor staging of The Tempest at Shakespeare North Playhouse, alongside prior national and international tours of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo & Juliet, The Tempest and As You Like It. Her wider directing credits include the RSC-devised Weirdo Sister, and Slapstick Picnic’s touring productions of Peter Pan and The Importance of Being Earnest.
Nel is also a playwright, creating a wide range of work including award-winning theatre for families and young people, building a distinct, joy-forward body of work. Her Bucket Club writing credits include Lorraine & Alan (co-written with Becky Ripley — Battersea Arts Centre / Tobacco Factory / UK tour), Launch Party (Farnham Maltings), Fossils (Edinburgh Fringe, New Diorama & Brits Off Broadway), Catch That Beast! (Birmingham Hippodrome & tour) and The Christmas Lobster (Farnham Maltings). In 2025 she was commissioned by the parenting app Raisly to write a series of twelve original bedtime stories.
She has previously worked as an associate and assistant director for the RSC, OperaUpClose, Young Vic and Tobacco Factory Theatres, alongside directors including Jo Davies, John Nicholson, Andrew Hilton and Richard Jones. Nel is also an experienced teacher and facilitator, working at Mountview and Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, and with international school groups and adult theatre makers. She has mentored through National Theatre Connections and the JMK Trust, led devised intensives in Calgary and directed interactive Shakespearean tours with International Theatre Amsterdam. Her development includes the Genesis Future Directors Award (finalist twice), the Almeida Theatre Resident Directors Pool, the BBC Performing Arts Fund Fellowship, and a Jerwood Assistant Directorship at the Young Vic. She is an accredited coach (Relational Dynamics), a Royal Court Young Writers Group alumna, and holds a BA(Hons) in Drama from the University of Bristol.
Nel currently has several exciting new projects in development including an early years show she is directing and devising with the Unicorn, a new children’s opera she’s directing with English Touring Opera, a main-house co-production of Arthur which she's directing with Polka Theatre and The Egg (Theatre Royal Bath) and her latest director-writer project is in R&D.
