Bio

Sophia Golan is a theatre director and writer.

Most recently, she directed A Brief Play About Rage, which won a Fringe Award for Best Performance and received several five-star reviews. The play started at The Cockpit Theatre and transferred to the Omnibus Theatre. "I genuinely couldn't take my eyes off this gripping piece of theatre" (Theatre&Tonic). "Bold, unsettling and brilliantly executed. It demands to be seen" (West End Best Friend).

As a director, her work includes: The Death of Small Things (The Cockpit), A Very Clownless Show (Playhouse East), her original solo show called The Elephant and I (Camden People's Theatre), and her original play MELTING (The Old Red Lion Theatre).

As an Assistant Director, her credits include LEAR (The Yard Theatre), starring Sir Ian McKellen, co-written by Simon Stephens and Jay Miller, and directed by Jay Miller; The Glass Menagerie (The Yard Theatre), directed by Jay Miller (Olivier Award-winning for Best Production in an Affiliate Theatre) and Christmas Day (Almeida Theatre), directed by James Macdonald and written by Sam Grabiner.

She graduated with distinction from her MA in Theatre Directing at Royal Holloway University of London, where she studied Katie Mitchell's method closely. Later, she was Katie Mitchell's intern on The House of Bernarda Alba at Hamburg Schauspielhaus and Oliver Frljić's intern on Schlachten at the Gorki Theatre in Berlin.

Sophia is interested in creating worlds that synthesise heightened naturalism with expressionism, nuanced human relationships within conceptual visual landscapes, stretching the tensions between localised intimacy and universal symbolism.
